Majestic Ash

The Majestic Ash Tree, scientifically known as Fraxinus uhdei ‘Majestic’ (a cultivar of the Shamel Ash or Tropical Ash), is a highly prized and versatile evergreen to semi-evergreen shade tree. While the species Fraxinus uhdei is native to Mexico, this ‘Majestic’ cultivar has been specifically developed for superior performance in various warm climates. It thrives in regions with hot summers and mild winters, making it an exceptionally popular and successfully cultivated choice in Phoenix, Arizona, and similar areas of the southwestern United States. It adapts well to a range of well-drained soils and prefers full sun.

As a long-lived perennial, the Majestic Ash Tree can persist for many decades, often 50 years or more, developing into a substantial and beautiful shade tree. Its most distinctive characteristics include its dense, expansive canopy of large, glossy, dark green compound leaves. Unlike many deciduous ash varieties, the ‘Majestic’ cultivar tends to retain its foliage longer in the fall, or remain fully evergreen in warmer climates, providing continuous shade throughout the year. The leaves are composed of multiple leaflets, giving the canopy a lush and full appearance. This tree typically develops a strong, upright to rounded growth habit, forming a broad, umbrella-like canopy that provides significant cooling shade, which is invaluable in hot desert environments like Phoenix. Being a seedless variety, it eliminates the mess associated with ash seeds, making it a cleaner choice for urban and residential landscapes. While inconspicuous flowers may appear, its primary ornamental value is its robust form and persistent, vibrant green foliage. The Majestic Ash is known for its rapid growth rate and general resistance to common ash diseases and pests, unlike some other ash species. Its resilience to heat, drought tolerance (once established), and low maintenance requirements make the Majestic Ash an excellent choice for large residential yards, parks, commercial developments, and as a durable street tree where ample shade and a clean, evergreen presence are desired.
