Cape Plumbago

The Cape Plumbago, scientifically known as Plumbago auriculata (formerly P. capensis), is a graceful and exceptionally free-flowering evergreen perennial shrub or sprawling vine. Native to South Africa, specifically the Eastern Cape region, it thrives in warm, subtropical climates and is adaptable to various well-drained soils, from full sun to partial shade. In the landscape of Phoenix, Arizona, it is a highly popular and widely planted choice, cherished for its ability to provide delicate, consistent color throughout the long growing season. This resilient plant can live for many years, often 10-20 years or more, forming attractive, billowing masses.

Its most distinctive characteristic is its airy, open growth habit with slender, somewhat sprawling stems that can be allowed to trail as a groundcover, climb with support, or be pruned into a more compact shrub. The leaves are light green, oval-shaped, and arranged alternately along the stems, providing a fresh, soft texture. The true spectacle of the Cape Plumbago is its profusion of delicate, phlox-like flowers that are a lovely, sky-blue to light-blue color, with five petals arranged in a pinwheel shape. These charming blooms appear in loose clusters at the branch tips, often blooming almost continuously from spring through fall and often into mild winters in warm climates like Phoenix. The soft blue hue offers a soothing contrast to the vibrant greens and brighter colors of other desert-adapted plants. While relatively inconspicuous, small seed capsules may follow the blooms. The Cape Plumbago is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, requiring moderate water, and is known for its relatively fast growth. Its elegant form, long blooming period, and attractive color make it an excellent choice for informal hedges, mass plantings, groundcover on slopes, spilling over walls, or as an airy accent in xeriscapes, Mediterranean-style gardens, and traditional landscapes. Its delicate appearance belies its tough nature, making it a reliable performer in the Phoenix heat.
