Blue Flame Agave

Here’s a description for the Blue Flame Agave:

Blue Flame Agave

The Blue Flame Agave, scientifically known as Agave ‘Blue Flame’, is a stunning and highly sought-after hybrid succulent renowned for its elegant form and beautiful coloration. This cultivated variety is believed to be a cross between Agave attenuata (Foxtail Agave) and Agave shawii (Shaw’s Agave), combining the best characteristics of both. Its heritage suggests an adaptability to mild, Mediterranean climates and coastal regions, though it tolerates a variety of well-drained soils.

As a monocarpic perennial, the Blue Flame Agave has a lifespan of 8 to 25 years before it sends up a magnificent flower stalk, after which the main rosette gradually declines. Its most striking characteristic is its spineless, graceful, and broadly arching leaves that form a symmetrical, vase-shaped rosette. The leaves are a mesmerizing silvery-blue to blue-green color, often with a subtle, waxy bloom, and have soft, smooth margins, making them safe to plant near walkways. Unlike many agaves, it typically remains a manageable size, usually reaching 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, though it can sometimes produce small offsets (pups) at its base. When mature, it produces a tall, slender flower stalk, typically 10-15 feet high, adorned with clusters of pale yellow to greenish-yellow flowers. The Blue Flame Agave is an exceptional choice for modern landscapes, xeriscaping, container planting, and as a dramatic focal point, prized for its unique form, attractive color, and relative ease of care.
